What is the difference between laminated and toughened glass?

Toughened (tempered) glass is a singular, solid glass pane that is manufactured using a specialised thermal tempering process and is up to 4-5 stronger than regular float glass. Toughened glass is often referred to as ‘safety glass’, as when broken, it shatters into small, blunt pieces rather than large, sharper shards.

Laminated glass is two (or more) glass panels bonded together using an interlayer. When broken, the glass fragments stay in place by bonding to the interlayer.

What is the difference between a roof window, skylight, rooflight and roof lantern?

The terms roof window, rooflight and skylight are generally interchangeable and usually refer to flat glazing units installed onto a flat or pitched roof. Designed to maximise natural light in spaces below, these can be fixed (non-opening), or can be opened electrically or manually.

Roof lanterns are distinguishable in their design, featuring a pyramid-shaped structure that protrudes above the roof. They consist of at least 4 glass panels set within a frame and are commonly installed on flat-roofs or conservatories. With their striking design, roof lanterns can complement the aesthetics of a room, often functioning as a central design element.

Roof windows, rooflights, skylights and roof lanterns are available in various styles, colours and specifications. Ultimately, your choice depends on the type of roof and the room’s size, ventilation requirements and lighting needs.

At Sunview Rooflights, we have stocked and bespoke options to suit every flat roof project type and requirement.

Can I install your rooflights myself?

While some experienced DIY enthusiasts may undertake installation, we recommend hiring a professional. Every project is unique and factors such as upstand construction, weatherproofing and creating a suitable pitch are best handled by a competent installer.

All of our rooflight and roof lantern models come with detailed installation instructions and videos. Correct installation is crucial to ensure the rooflight covered under warranty and to ensure it is fit and functional for years to come.

What angle or fall should my flat-roof skylight be?

No skylight should be installed completely flat, even on a flat roof. For all of our rooflights (excluding roof lanterns), we recommend a minimum pitch of at least 80mm for every 1000mm skylight size e.g. 1:12 or 5°. A water test can be carried out on-site by pouring water onto the highest point and monitoring pooling – the fall can then be adjusted accordingly.

Installing a skylight with the correct fall ensures the effectiveness of the self-cleaning glass coating, encourages rainwater runoff, prevents pooling and staining, which can cause potential long-term damage to the glass or seals.

If your roof is completely level, your installer should add the suitable fall into the upstand timbers.

Can you install these products on a pitched roof?

All of our rooflight models are primarily used in flat-roof installations, however they can be used on pitched roofs if deemed suitable by a professional installer and building control.

Our installation literature only includes instructions for flat roof installations, so it would be the responsibility of the installer to ensure the rooflight is suitable and to take precautions to ensure proper rainwater run-off.

Please note, we do not provide any accessories for pitched roof installations, such as flashing kits.

Installing your rooflight in a way that differs from our installation instructions and drawings does risk invaliding your warranty.

How much do skylights cost in the UK?

The cost of skylights in the UK can vary quite a bit depending on a few key factors such as the size, whether it’s double or triple glazed, and if it’s a fixed or opening unit. We recommend getting in touch so we can understand your requirements and can give a better estimate.

Prices can also be influenced by things like custom specifications, frame finishes, or whether you’re buying as a one-off or for a larger trade project. You should also factor in additional installation costs into your purchase.

At Sunview Rooflights, we stock thousands of rooflights and aim to provide the best value rooflights on the market. We have various models suited to every price point and project requirement. We recommend getting in touch so we can understand your requirements and can give a better estimate.

Do rooflights need planning permission?

In many cases, rooflights do not require planning permission as they fall under Permitted Development (PD).

However, there are exceptions that will require you to get planning permission. It’s always best to check with your local planning authority before starting any work.

You can visit the government planning permission portal here: https://www.gov.uk/planning-permission-england-wales

Regardless of planning permission, all skylights in accordance with safety, skylight and building regulations.

Are your rooflights suitable for walk-on applications?

Our skylights are NOT suitable for walk-on applications. You must not walk on the unit under any circumstances and must take proper safety precautions to prevent/warn others from doing so.

Walk-on rooflights are a specialist type of rooflight that are certified for foot traffic loadings. They use much thicker glass specifications than standard rooflights, such as 33mm thick laminated glass.

What is your delivery information?

Standard Delivery – Free
We aim to deliver our stocked rooflights to anywhere within mainland UK within 2-4 working days.

Bespoke or made-to-order units will have an estimated lead time confirmed at the point of purchase.

We use a dedicated day service, meaning we will aim to deliver your order on your specified day. Once your order is confirmed, our dispatch team will contact you by phone to arrange delivery — please ensure a valid number is provided.

Delivery Details
Most deliveries to London and the Home Counties are handled by our own team or a private A to B carrier.

Other areas within Mainland UK are serviced via pallet courier (TPN – The Pallet Network).

All deliveries are to the kerbside. The delivery drivers will not be able to assist you in moving your rooflight into your property due to insurance coverage.

All rooflights will arrive in a timber slatted crate for protection and for ease of moving. We recommend you keep the rooflight in the crate until the later stages of the installation process.

Units over 2000mm wide will need manual or mechanical assistance on site to offload.

Deliveries take place Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm. We are unable to guarantee specific timeslots.

While almost all orders arrive on their estimated dates, we cannot be held responsible for delays outside of our control, e.g. during transport. Therefore, we recommend that any installation work is organised once all the goods have been received.

Important Notes
Inspect units on arrival and report any damage at the time of delivery or within 24 hours — we cannot accept claims after the fact.

A failed delivery (e.g. no one available to accept or offload) may incur a re-delivery charge.
